Legislative panel to scrutinize electricity rate hikes

State Rep. Josh Cutler and his colleagues on the House Post Audit & Oversight Committee are hosting a legislative hearing to examine recent hikes in electricity rates. Officials from the Attorney General’s Energy and Environmental Bureau have been requested to attend the meeting, scheduled for April 7 at the State House.

“We’ve seen an unprecedented increase in electric rates this season which has created a significant hardship for many residents,” said Rep. Cutler. “Consumers deserve better answers about what is causing these hikes and what can be done to address them. This oversight meeting is an important step in the process.”

In addition to learning about the reasons behind the higher electricity rates, the panel's goal is to review current authority over rate regulation and examine whether the state can prevent similar rate hikes in the future. The House Post Audit and Oversight Committee is chaired by Rep. Dave Linsky of Natick.

Rep. Cutler encourages Pembroke residents who have experienced significant rate increases to share details including copies of utility bills showing year over year increases (with any personal information redacted). Please email him at josh.cutler@mahouse.gov.
