Media Shield legislation

Today I testified in support of H. 1533, the Mass. Media Shield bill. This legislation would protect against forced disclosure of confidential sources by the news media. Forty other states have a media shield law on the books to protect whistleblowers, but Massachusetts has only a common law privilege that is ambiguous and not uniformly applied. Whether it's our law enforcement personnel, news reporters, judges or private citizens we all benefit from having a clear standard and common set of rules. Without assurances that their identities will be protected some citizens may be afraid to speak out and important stories may not be reported on -- to the detriment of the general public. The bill is authored by my colleague Rep. Alice Peisch. Also joining me to testify in support of the bill was Rep. Jim Cantwell who brought an important perspective as a former assistant district attorney.
